  • Using search Filter in Windows 7

    In Windows 7’s Library there are five folders – Documents, Download, Music, Pictures and Videos. Each hold their own special files. For example, the Pictures folder is normally where all pictures files are saved.

    When you click the Search Box in any of these windows, a drop-down menu appears displaying its filters highlighted in blue. The types of filters that are available differ from one folder to the other.

    The illustration below shows you the five library windows each displaying their filters. Note the different filters in some Search Boxes.

    Setting Search to Work

    Let’s put Search to the test and perform a search in the Libraries folder rather than one in the specialized folders for example the Music folder. In this Search we’ll look for pieces of Music. 1. Open Libraries. 2. Click the Search box to reveal the Search parameters. You will see four – Authors, Type Date modified and Size. 3. Choose Kind by clicking on it. This opens a drop-down list. Here there are many kinds of files. Search "Kinds" in Libraries

    4. Scroll down the list to find Music and click it. This adds Music to the S earch box. 5. Immediately Search goes to work and finds all the Musi c on your computer . Scroll down to find the piece you want.

    This is applicable to any of the Search boxes in the specialized folders, Documents, Downloads, and Music. Choices, Choices!

    When you perform a Search if you choose the search filter Kind, the list of choices is extensive. This table shows the full range. Filter Kinds You can type any one of these filters in the Start Menu Search box and Search finds files pertaining to that filter. This is the result of typing “link” in the Search box below this is the result.

    Other Filters While we are still in Libraries folder, there are other choices available – Date Modified and Type. Search by Date Modified If you choose Date Modified a Calendar opens. Here you can select a Date in the current calendar or choose an option in the lower section of the box.

    Type If you choose Type a drop-down list of types appears. Select the type of file you are searching for.

    Working in the Specialized Folders In the five specialized folders the options may vary a little. Some Search filters are the same but some are different specially associated with the type of folder you are in. Specific search filters appear in specific folders. For example, if you open the Videos folder, the Search box offers these search filters such as Length, Date Created, and Type. If you choose the Length filter, there are five duration parameters in the drop-down list.     Searching in the Pictures Folder

    Now, it’s time to perform a search in one of the special folders. We’ll use the Picture folder and try and find some lost pictures taken in December, 2008. 1. Open Pictures folder. 2. Click the Search box to reveal the Search parameters. You will see four – Date Taken, Tags and Size.

    3. Click on the Date taken filter. 4. This opens a Calendar. 5. In it select a date in the Month on display or scroll back to an earlier date or chose one of the options in the lower section.

    6. Once you do this, the chosen date is listed in the Search box. 7. Immediately, Search goes to work and finds all the pitures on your computer. 8. Scroll down to find the picture you want.
